let's talk hydration with our FAQ

Find helpful answers to the most common inquiries about using and maintaining your Fleximug in our FAQ section below:

What makes this mug and straw so special?

The Fleximug is the only hands-free hydration solution designed with a leakproof, stainless steel mug and a quick-connect/release straw that’s poseable, flexible, and stays in place to help people with limited arm mobility and mild-to-moderate reduced lung function take a drink faster and more independently. This unique combination empowers users and their caregivers to regain time, control and confidence while staying hydrated throughout the day!

Can I run the fleximug through the dishwasher?

We do not recommend you run the Fleximug in the dishwasher to keep it in the best shape possible and avoid malfunction. All straws include a cleaning brush. To clean inside the straw, insert the brush through each end, and rise with hot, soapy tap water. For more details on care required for individual components, we recommend checking out the Care and Use Guide for your corresponding system. A Care and Use Guide is included with each Hands-Free Hydration Kit upon purchase.

When do I need to clean the Fleximug?

Please clean your Fleximug before every use.

How long should the drinking straw be when you purchase?

We recommend users purchase a straw length that will allow them to reach their face/mouth comfortably, depending on their wheelchair, desk, or bed-rail set-up. We also suggest getting a length longer than you think you need, so you have plenty of room to adjust the straw. The straws are easily interchangeable, so if your chair, desk or bed set-up changes, the straw can change with you, too! Various straw lengths are available.

Check out our suggested straw length diagram using the Quantum motorized wheelchair:

How do I know where to mount the bottle?

We recommend users purchase a straw length that will allow them to reach their face/mouth comfortably, depending on their wheelchair, desk, or bed-rail set-up. Wherever you mount it, just make sure it’s not in the way of changing configuration, when the chair goes from sitting to standing, the chair can still collapse. Check out suggested locations for where to mount in the graphics below:

Can we replace the straw/other parts?

Yes you absolutely can! We offer replacement parts, such as mug/lid, straws, bottle holders, cleaning brushes and more. By investing in replacement parts, you can extend the lifespan of your Fleximug and ensure you continue to experience the ease and convenience of independent hydration for a lifetime. Purchase here.

How does the quick release straw work?

If the release clip has been accidently released, the neck will not go onto the mug. To open it, you need to put the button on the base of the straw.

What if it becomes difficult to attach the straw?

Over time,  the o-ring of the lid can wear out with regular use, and it can become difficult to attach the fleximug straw to the mug. We sell replacement o-rings to get this working again. Write in to sales@fleximug.com to purchase a new one.

Is Fleximug leakproof?

The mug is constructed from high-quality, BPA-free stainless steel, and won’t leak due to our patented, one-way air vent technology. This means it won’t spill with the straw removed. When the straw is connected, the lid must be securely fastened and positioned upright to remain leakproof.

What kinds of liquids can I put in the Fleximug?

The Fleximug is primarily recommended for water and other non-viscous liquids. We recommend that you use Fleximug with only water, but if you use it with hot or carbonated beverages, make sure to release any built-up air pressure inside the mug before attaching the straw. If you attach the straw to the lid while air pressure is trapped inside the mug, fluid may squirt out of the straw. Release any built-up air pressure – by unscrewing the lid – before you connect the straw.

We recommend avoiding:

  • Juices with pulp
  • Ice-blended beverages (Smoothies, ICEEs, Frappuccino, etc)
  • Viscous drinks/foods – such as yogurt
  • Partially Gelatinated Non-Dairy Gum-Based Beverages
  • Shakes

I’d like to keep my Fleximug in the freezer. Is that okay?

Do not place it in the freezer. While keeping a backup in the fridge is a great idea, we do not suggest storing a spare in the freezer. Water expansion can lead to severe bottle damage. Never freeze a backup with drinking tubes or bite/check valves submerged.

Are any of the mug’s components microwave safe?

No, none of the Fleximug components are microwave safe. Do not place it in the microwave.

fleximug pro tips

Get the most out of your Fleximug with these helpful pointers

#1) Use caution with hot or carbonated beverages:

We recommend that you use Fleximug with only water, but if you use it with hot or carbonated beverages, make sure to release any built-up air pressure inside the mug before attaching the straw. If you attach the straw to the lid while air pressure is trapped inside the mug, fluid may squirt out of the straw. Release any built-up air pressure – by unscrewing the lid – before you connect the straw. Do not place in freezer or microwave.

#2) Avoid leaks with perfect placement:

The rectangular plastic cap located at the base of the straw must be pushed in before connecting the straw to the lid. Position the straw tip upwards, and make sure it stays placed above the liquid level in your mug. The one-way valve included in the Fleximug lid can siphon liquid if allowed to flow downwards, and will not stop unless positioned otherwise.

#3) Always mount Fleximug below your mouth:

Fleximug includes a one-way valve built into the lid that regulates air pressure and makes it easier to drink from. But if you place the mug above your mouth, the straw becomes a siphon – once liquid starts flowing it keeps flowing. You can reverse the flow by blowing back into the straw, but to prevent yourself from potentially getting soaked, always mount Fleximug below your mouth.

#4) Wash/rinse your fleximug after each use:

We recommend you hand wash the mug, lid, and straw to prevent residue buildup. If you use Fleximug with sugary beverages or sodas, the connection between the lid and straw can become sticky over time. Clean the connection between the lid and straw regularly to prevent difficulties with attaching the straw.
